18 SACCO membership plans, side by side

A member-owned co-op. You buy shares and save monthly; returns are declared each year from the surplus, not promised in advance.

How this is ordered

Ordered by what you would actually be left with — the same money in, over the same years, with each plan's own charges taken out. Not by the rate each one advertises.

The example: KES 5,000 a month for 5 years.

One that takes a lump sum

These publish no monthly minimum, so the example is the smallest single deposit they accept, left for the same five years. The amounts going in differ, so these are not ranked against the table above.

16 that cannot be placed

These do not publish enough for the example to be worked out. That is not a reason to leave them off the page.

  • · Harambee Sacco Membership: before charges. The rate declared on deposits for 2024, from the Sacco's own FAQ, which works an example at it. Share capital got 15%. Deposits earn pro rata by the month they came in, and 5% withholding tax comes off. The FAQ had not been updated for 2025 when read.
  • · Kenya National Police Sacco Membership: before charges. The rate on members' deposits for 2024, printed in the Sacco's own accounts; it was 11% in 2023 too. Share capital paid 17% both years. The Sacco's site had not published its 2025 accounts when we read it, so 2024 is the latest figure from its own hand.
  • · Sheria Sacco Membership: before charges. What the board proposed on qualifying deposits for 2024 in the Sacco's own annual report — 11%, up from 9.5% in 2023 — alongside 16% on share capital, the same as 2023. Declared after the year ended; nothing says next year matches. Sheria's longer-term Mavuno savings paid 8.5% (5-year) and 10% (10-year).
  • · Stima Sacco Membership: before charges. What the Sacco paid on Alpha Deposits for the year to November 2025, voted at the AGM after the year ended. It is not a promise about next year, and the payout arrives net of taxes, processing fees and Risk Fund contributions. Share capital earned 16% the same year.
  • · Tower Sacco Membership: before charges. What the board proposed as rebates on non-withdrawable deposits for 2025, put to the 50th AGM on 24 January 2026. The same 13% was paid for 2024. Share capital was proposed at 20%, both years. The surplus is shared after the year ends; nothing promises next year.
  • · Unaitas Sacco Membership: before charges. The dividend proposed for 2023 in the Sacco's own annual report: KES 316,872,140 on share capital of KES 4,067,127,204, about 7.8%. The report does not state a rate on deposits anywhere in its text. Declared after the year ended; nothing says next year matches.

Grades measure how openly a company explains its charges, not whether a plan is good. How we work them out.
